Trading in
Specified Investment Products (SIPs)


To safeguard the interests of retail investors, since 1 January 2012, MAS has
implemented new measures for the trading of SIPs.

This ensures that retail investors understand the complexities
and risks involved in trading SIPs. To assess your eligibility, you must fulfil
certain criteria or undergo an evaluation before commencing SIP trading.




What are SIPs?

SIPs are complex financial products that have structures, features and risks that are more difficult to understand.

SIPs include:

  • On SGX securities market
    • Certain Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and notes (ETNs)
    • Futures (extended settlement contracts)
    • Structured warrants
    • Certificates
    • Callable bull / bear contracts (not available on SGX yet)

       
  • On SGX derivatives market
    • Futures
    • Options

       
  • All overseas-listed investment products are classified as SIPs except the following which are classified as EIPs:

    o Ordinary Shares (excluding Preference Shares)
    o Company Warrants
    o Depository receipts
    o REITs
    o Bonds (plain vanilla)
    o Business trusts

    listed on the following exchanges:

    • AMEX
    • NASDAQ
    • HKEX
    • SET
    • IDX
    • PHSo
    • SZSE
    • SSE
    • LSE
    • TSE
    • ASX
    • Bursa Malaysia 

  • Unlisted SIPs
    • Leveraged Foreign Exchange

Trading SIPs

You need to fulfill at least one of the following criteria to trade in SIPs. From 28 February 2013, you need to acknowledge a one-time Risk Warning Statement(RWS) before transacting in an overseas-listed investment product.

Educational qualifications

  • Diploma or higher qualifications

in Accountancy, Actuarial Science, Business / Business Administration / Business Management / Business Studies, Capital Markets, Commerce, Economics, Finance, Financial Engineering, Financial Planning, Computational Finance or Insurance.

or

Investment experience

At least 6 transactions in listed / unlisted SIPs in the past 3 years

or

Work experience

  • At least 3 consecutive years of working experience in the past 10 years in the development of, structuring of, management of, sale of, trading of, research on and analysis of investment products or the provision of training in investment products
  • Experience in Accountancy, Actuarial Science, Treasury or Financial Risk Management
  • Provision of legal advice or possession of legal expertise in abovementioned areas
  • Have a professional finance-related qualification

If you do not satisfy one of the above criteria, to trade in listed SIPs, you will need to:
  • Undergo and complete an eTutorial
  • Pass an online quiz


If you do not satisfy one of the above criteria, to trade in unlisted SIPs , you will need to:


Undergo and complete an e-learning course and pass the online assessment at ABS-SAS E-Learning Portal for Investors

Start trading listed SIPs: By mail

In line with the new requirements, you will need to complete a Customer Account Review (CAR) declaration in order to trade listed SIPs.

In line with the new requirements, you will need to complete a Customer Account Review (CAR) declaration in order to trade listed SIPs.

With iOCBC

Login to iOCBC with your user ID and password. Under the “SIP” tab, open the CAR declaration form and submit it online.

Login to SGX online portal and complete the CAR declaration form

Upon completion, inform your trading representative.  

Start trading unlisted SIPs

In line with the new requirements, you will need to complete the Product Risk Classification, Client Investment Profile, and Customer Knowledge Assessment declaration found within the Leveraged FX Account application form in order to trade in leveraged FX.
